Handcrafted Hickory Syrups
We decided to carry handcrafted hickory syrup as part of our offerings after meeting Joyce & Travis Miller at a Mother Earth News Event a few years ago. Their booth was swamped and they sold out day after day. The Millers are located in rural Clark County, Virginia, and handcraft small batches from select hickory bark. They use the bark from a variety of tree species including the Shagbark tree, which sheds its bark naturally. However, no tree is ever harmed in the collection process.
Once gathered, the bark is scrubbed clean, toasted to enhance flavor, put through the manual extraction process, aged, and filtered. A minimal amount of turbinado sugar is added to enhance the exquisite hickory taste. A hydrometer is used to ensure that the correct sugar to hickory bark extract ratio is maintained for consistent flavor.
Native Americans used the bark for its healing properties and as a high-energy food source. Hickory bark syrup has a high magnesium content which actually benefits hundreds of biochemical reactions in your body. In fact, magnesium is involved in:
